BOSTON...Datapoint Corporation (NYSE) announced today at NetWorld the
completion of the high-performance, multi-speed ARCNETPLUS local area
network (LAN) protocol designed to meet network-intensive application
demands. Product shipments will begin in April.
ARCNETPLUS reflects the implementation of several highly creative concepts
never before applied to the LAN environment. The most significant is a LAN
with multiple speed capabilities: ARCNETPLUS performs at a 20 Mbits per
second data transfer rate when exchanging information with ARCNETPLUS
nodes, and at a 2.5 Mbits per second rate when interacting with ARCNET
nodes. ARCNETPLUS supports direct compatibility with existing ARCNET
networks, which account for about 25 percent of the world's LAN
connections.
"This announcement reflects the simple fact that Datapoint, who introduced
the first commercial LAN in 1977, is re-establishing its position as a
leader in the LAN marketplace," stated Jan Berger, Datapoint's Vice
President of Marketing. Berger added that "the flexibility and outstanding
performance of ARCNETPLUS will provide an economic alternative for LAN
power users."
Marketing Director Robert Hollingsworth said, "the ARCNETPLUS technology is
designed for ease of installation, reliability, and conformance with the
International Standards Organization's Open Systems Interconnect
networking model, as well as ANSI ATA 878.1."
ARCNETPLUS has been implemented as standard components to allow developers
to create value-added products with assured network compatibility. In
addition, Datapoint will offer certification testing to guarantee network
integrity.
Datapoint will market ARCNETPLUS through network distributors,
concentrating on organizations which have successfully combined ARCNET PC
LANs with networking software such as Novell.
Datapoint, a leader in networking Information Technology--information
processing, personal computing, telephony services, and video
conferencing--markets its products and services in 42 countries worldwide
as part of its Open Systems Networking (OSN) strategy.
